πŸ“ Detailed Description

This is a fabulous and extremely rare Joseph Heinrich complete tea or coffee service set. It is a HUGE set and magnificent, in excellent condition. See photos. There is a bend in the tray on an edge.

I did clean the top of one saucer. The cups are bottomless as they would have had glass inserts.

Complete Set Includes:
  • Hot water urn with burner
  • Rabbit figural stand
  • Huge serving tray (475mm diameter / 1 foot 7 inches)
  • 8 cups and saucers
  • Cream/milk bowl
  • Sugar bowl
  • Privacy screen (folds to 520mm / 2 feet 8.5 inches)
  • Salt and pepper set (3 pieces with stand and handle)
  • Small burner or cigar lighter

The burner is well designed with a sliding snuffer. All the wicks are still in there. All pieces are hallmarked except for the screen, but it is obviously part of this set.

I imagine this came from an old train or hotel as Joseph Heinrich made items for them. I have not washed or polished any of this set except for one saucer just to see what it might look like.

This is an early piece c1897-1899. After 1900 he made plainer items.

πŸ“ Measurements:

  • Tray: 475mm diameter (1 foot 7 inches)
  • Hot water tank: 22cm (8.5 inches)
  • On hare stand: 28cm (11 inches)
  • Screen unfolded: 520mm (2 feet 8.5 inches)

πŸ›οΈ Historical Background

Joseph Heinrich's firm was located in NYC around 1897 and they made kitchenware for hotels, trains, etc. They were big designers during the Arts and Crafts period.

His hammered pieces are some of the most collected. They worked almost exclusively in copper and sterling silver.

From Rainwater & Redfield's "Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers" they note that "Joseph Heinrich worked as a molder and finisher of copperware in the late 1880's."
